Damage to Ancient Monuments in Limassol Highlands Fire

Eight ancient monuments have been damaged by the recent fire in the Limassol highlands, according to statements by the Deputy Minister of Culture, Vasiliki Kassianidou, to the Cyprus News Agency (CYPE).

Ms. Kassianidou, along with a delegation from the Department of Antiquities, will visit the affected areas to assess the damage and take measures. The damage includes the watermill in the Kapsalia area, the medieval bridge in the Eliomylos area, and the ruins of early Christian and Byzantine churches in the Souni-Zanatzia communities.

According to the Deputy Minister, 57 monuments of list B were also inspected, which have not been damaged. The government is collecting information to have a complete picture of the problems and take the necessary measures.

Ms. Kassianidou will meet with the Community Leaders to discuss possible cancellations of cultural events and the provision of financial support to artists. The Deputy Ministry of Culture is also exploring ways to utilize the budget for health and culture issues in order to support the affected communities.
