48 Years Since the Death of Archbishop Makarios

Today marks 48 years since the death of Archbishop Makarios, the first president of the Republic of Cyprus.
He was one of the most important figures in the modern history of Cyprus, the founder and architect of the independent Republic of Cyprus. His name is associated with the struggles of the Cypriot people for freedom and democracy.
Born in the village of Panagia in 1913, he served as Bishop of Kitium from 1948 to 1950, when he was ordained Archbishop. In 1960, the Cypriot people elected him president of the Republic of Cyprus, a position he held until his death on August 3, 1977.
The annual religious memorial service for Ethnarch Makarios will be held at the Kykkos Monastery, in the presence of President Christodoulides. A eulogy will be delivered by the Minister of Education, Athina Michaelidou.
