Greece is Cyprus' most valuable ally and supporter, stated the President of the Parliament, Annita Dimitriou, during her meeting with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, Ioannis – Michael Loverdos, in Nicosia. The meeting took place within the framework of the World Conference of Cypriot Diaspora.

Ms. Dimitriou emphasized the ongoing consequences of the Turkish invasion and occupation and the need for unity for the survival of Cypriot Hellenism. She also expressed concern about the illegal detention of 5 Greek Cypriots in the occupied territories and requested the assistance of the President of the European Parliament and the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for their release.

Mr. Loverdos stressed that the Cyprus issue is a top priority for Hellenism worldwide and that his presence at the conference sends a message of unity. He also emphasized the need to place the Cyprus issue on its correct basis, as an international problem of invasion and occupation.

During the meeting, the significant presence of Cypriot expatriates in various countries and the need for a more modern approach to diaspora issues were mentioned.
