AKEL is calling for the repeal of the law on demonstrations, arguing that it restricts fundamental freedoms and strengthens state authoritarianism. The call comes after a mass rally organized by the party.

In a statement, AKEL accuses the Christodoulides government of continuing the policy of curtailing human rights, as initiated by the previous Anastasiades – DISY government. The law on demonstrations, passed by the parties DISY, DIKO, ELAM, DIPA, and EDEK, is at the center of criticism.

AKEL maintains that the law is contrary to the recommendations of international organizations and the case law of the ECHR, and has submitted a relevant proposal to Parliament to replace it with new legislation compatible with the European Convention on Human Rights.
