Alma: Government Delay in 112 Early Warning System

The Alma-Citizens for Cyprus movement has denounced delays in the implementation of the 112 early warning system, which should have been operational since June 2022, according to European Directive 2018/1972.

In a statement, Alma stated that the recent deadly fire highlighted the absence of such a system, with residents being notified by traditional means, such as the ringing of the bell, without organized evacuation and clear guidance.

The movement referred to the delays in the implementation of the system by the government, noting that the tender for its acquisition was canceled and re-announced, resulting in valuable time being lost. Specifically, they mentioned that after the final cancellation of the first tender in May 2024, it took seven months to announce a new tender and an additional five months to evaluate the bids.

Alma concluded that citizens are entitled to an effective state and that this delay is unacceptable.
