Alma: American Experts Do Not Replace an Independent Committee

The Alma Movement – Citizens for Cyprus, in a statement regarding the fires, stated that 'the team of American experts, even if it reaches useful conclusions regarding the management of future fires, does not replace an Independent Investigative Committee, which could investigate responsibilities at all levels'.

The movement added that 'the responsibility, therefore, for assigning political responsibilities remains at this moment with the President himself' and that 'President Christodoulides cannot continue to hide and try to muddy the waters'.

Furthermore, Alma stated that 'the removal from their positions of the involved Ministers and their replacement by persons who can respond to their institutional role is the minimum prerequisite' for democratic accountability and substantial state reconstruction.

The movement also emphasized the need for immediate and satisfactory support for those affected by the fires and for the restoration of the natural environment.
