CT Analysis: Erhürman's Ambiguous Stance on Cyprus Issue

Tufan Erhürman is not clarifying his position on the Cyprus issue, maintaining an ambiguous stance. In statements following his meeting with António Guterres in New York, the Turkish Cypriot leader appears to be moving in two directions, speaking both of sovereignty and acceptance of convergences reached up to Crans Montana.
At the same time, he rejects the proposal of the President of the Republic, which has the same content as the convergences, but states that he does not want negotiations 'from scratch'. Erhürman's statements do not clarify whether he agrees with the resumption of negotiations on the basis of the UN Security Council resolutions and whether he seeks a solution with a federal structure.
While calling for acceptance of the Crans Montana convergences, he rejects the Christodoulides proposal that has the same content, arguing that reaffirming the convergences leads to negotiation. Erhürman's ambiguous stance causes confusion about his intentions and the direction he desires for the Cyprus issue.
