The President of DISY, Annita Demetriou, described as positive the fact that the process for the Cyprus issue remains alive after the informal five-party meeting in New York, with other meetings planned.

In her speech at the anti-occupation event "With a Suitcase and a Key," Demetriou emphasized the need for real progress and substantive meetings, stressing that chapters revealing Turkish intransigence must be opened.

She also mentioned that Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) are important only if they serve the goal of substantive talks and should not be accepted as a prerequisite for the resumption of meaningful negotiations, as such a situation reinforces the status quo of the occupation.

Demetriou reiterated that a solution is sought within the agreed framework, based on international law, the European acquis, and UN resolutions, with a Bi-communal, Bi-zonal Federation, without occupying troops and guarantees.

Finally, she stressed the need to avoid internal polarization and the need for coordination with Greece, to make it clear to European partners that EU-Turkey relations can be a lever of pressure on Turkey.
