Averof Neofytou: No to closing the checkpoints

Former DISY leader Averof Neofytou has voiced his opposition to the potential closure of checkpoints, warning of negative consequences for the reunification effort in Cyprus.
In a statement, Mr. Neofytou stressed that anger over the arrests of Greek Cypriots in the occupied territories should not lead to decisions that would serve the goals of Turkey and the occupying regime. He described the potential closure of the checkpoints as a "strategic mistake with incalculable costs."
Averof Neofytou argued that such a step would reinforce the logic of partition and give Turkey the alibi to reinstate direct trade and flights to the occupied territories.
"Closing the checkpoints is not an act of resistance and a show of force. It is a gift to those who seek partition," he stated.
