EDEK (United Democratic Union of the Centre) is mourning the loss of Aris Mavroskoufis, whom it describes as a "great fighter" and an "example of a champion of democracy." In a statement, the party emphasizes the respect Mavroskoufis earned for the "sobriety of his political and party discourse."

Aris Mavroskoufis actively participated in the resistance against the junta in Greece. As a student of Physics and Mathematics at the University of Athens, he joined the "Democratic Resistance Committees." In September 1967, he was arrested along with others for planting bombs in Athens. He was tried and sentenced to 12 years in prison by a Military Court.

After his release in 1973, he continued his studies in Scandinavia. Upon returning, he became a member of EDEK, serving on the Political Bureau and the Central Committee. EDEK bids him farewell as a "shining beacon of the principles and values of democracy and freedom."
