EDEK Mourns the Death of Aris Mavroskoufis

EDEK mourns the death of Aris Mavroskoufis, whom it describes as a "great fighter" and "an exemplary champion of democracy." In its announcement, EDEK describes him as a "stalwart rock of selflessness, self-sacrifice, and morality."
Aris Mavroskoufis actively participated in the anti-dictatorial struggle during the junta in Greece. As a student of Physics and Mathematics at the University of Athens, he joined the "Democratic Resistance Committees." In September 1967, he was arrested along with the Cypriot student Petros Dimitriou for planting bombs in Athens.
He was sentenced by a Military Court to twelve years in prison and suffered in the junta's dungeons until his release in February 1973. He then continued his studies in Scandinavia. Within EDEK, he served as a top executive and a member of the Political Bureau and the Central Committee.
EDEK emphasizes that Aris Mavroskoufis never sought to capitalize on his struggles and honors him as a hero and a beacon of the principles of democracy and freedom.
