UN Special Rapporteur: Plevris' Interventions on NGOs are 'Arbitrary'

UN Special Rapporteur Mary Lawlor expressed discontent over Migration Minister Thanos Plevris' threats to NGOs supporting refugees' right to asylum. In a post on X, Lawlor mentioned receiving "disturbing news" about the Greek Migration Minister's comments indicating an audit of several NGOs.
Lawlor emphasized that the Ministry should support human rights defenders, not target them with arbitrary interference and restrictions. Thanos Plevris had targeted over 100 organizations criticizing his policy regarding the suspension of asylum applications from individuals originating from North Africa.
The Migration Minister threatened that "whoever does not respect the decision will suffer the consequences" when NGOs appealed to the Administrative Court of Athens representing Sudanese refugees. Adonis Georgiadis expressed his support for Thanos Plevris, declaring himself "proud" of his statements.
