Strengthening Civil Defense in Cyprus: Upgrades and Challenges

Following the recent drone incident at Akrotiri airbase, the need to strengthen civil protection mechanisms in Cyprus is back in the spotlight. The readiness of Civil Defence, the availability of adequate shelters, and mechanisms for timely notification of citizens are immediate priorities.

The Minister of Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, acknowledged past shortcomings and informed Parliament about upgrade efforts that began in 2023. The goal is to gradually improve the country's readiness.

Providing incentives for owners to create shelters in buildings, as well as accelerating procedures for notifying citizens in case of an emergency, is an important step. The need for immediate action is imperative, given geopolitical developments and the ongoing occupation.
