Members of the Parliamentary Health Committee on Thursday called for further strengthening and modernization of the operation of public hospitals, during a discussion on the budget of the State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY) for 2026.

DISY MP, Charalambos Pazaros, stressed the importance of maintaining the General Health System (GHS) and its sustainability, proposing the administrative and financial autonomy of public hospitals.

AKEL MP, Marina Nikolaou, expressed concerns about the reduction of OKYPY's revenues, stressing that public hospitals should be the backbone of the GHS. She also referred to the shrinking of mental health services and the absence of a comprehensive strategic plan.

DIKO MP, Chrysanthos Savvidis, referred to progress in public hospitals, but also to problems due to population growth, such as at the Paphos hospital. He also noted the lack of intensivists and nurses.

Mr. Savvidis mentioned that at the end of March, Paphos will acquire a modern Emergency Department, with two beds for pediatric emergencies.
