National Divisions: Greece and Cyprus – A Lesson in Unity
Share on:

The article examines national divisions in Greece and Cyprus, analyzing the devastating consequences of discord and the need for unity. It refers to the National Schism in Greece (1915-1922) between Venizelos and Constantine, as well as the conflicts in Cyprus between Makarios and Grivas.

Dionysios Solomos, in his "Hymn to Liberty," warned of the danger of internal division. The 20th century confirmed his prophetic vision with two pivotal divisions: in Greece and in Cyprus. The National Schism in Greece led to the Asia Minor Catastrophe, while in Cyprus, the conflicts between Makarios supporters and Grivas supporters led to the Turkish invasion and the division of the island.

In both cases, strong personalities with different visions caused division, dissolving national cohesion. Greece paid with the loss of national goals, while Cyprus with partition. Solomos emphasized that freedom is not only a victory against foreigners but also reconciliation among one's own. Unity is essential for true freedom.
