Von der Leyen: 'Cyprus' Security is Our Security'

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen underscored the EU's solidarity with Cyprus during a speech at the European Parliament regarding developments in the war in Iran and energy challenges in Europe.

'We all stand in full solidarity with Cyprus. Your security is our security,' said von der Leyen, emphasizing the need to protect citizens and prepare for the consequences of the conflict.

Referring to the situation in Iran, von der Leyen noted hopes for a free Iran, while also emphasizing the EU's commitment to peace and international law.

Regarding the energy implications, she mentioned that natural gas prices have increased by 50% and oil prices by 27% since the start of the conflict, costing European taxpayers 3 billion euros in fossil fuel imports.

Von der Leyen stressed the importance of domestic energy sources, such as renewables and nuclear energy, and warned of the consequences of returning to Russian fossil fuels.

She also analyzed the structure of energy bills and referred to the European Emissions Trading System (ETS), emphasizing the need to modernize it.

Finally, she announced a new roadmap to strengthen European competitiveness entitled 'One Europe, One Market,' which will include legislative measures by the end of 2027.
