Cyprus's EU Presidency: Initial Test and Prospects

Cyprus has successfully completed the initial test of its EU Council presidency, inaugurating a six-month period in which it will serve as a bridge between the EU and the wider region.
At the opening ceremony, speakers avoided sharp references, with the Turkish occupation of EU territory in Cyprus not explicitly mentioned. The President of Cyprus referred to the occupation, while the head of the European Council made one reference. The President of the European Commission and the President of Ukraine made no mention.
Supporting Ukraine is seen as indirect support for Cyprus, given that both countries are victims of violations of International Law. The presence of leaders of EU institutions and representatives of countries, including the Ukrainian President and Qatar, was not welcomed by Turkey and the occupying regime.
Despite the omissions, the Turkish occupation of Cyprus remains a violation of International Law and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
