Speaker of Parliament: Polytechnic a timeless symbol of resistance

The Speaker of Parliament, Annita Demetriou, characterized the Polytechnic as a timeless symbol of resistance and struggle in her address to the Plenary.
Ms. Demetriou emphasized that the Polytechnic and its 'heroic children' remind us of the duty to safeguard democracy and freedom against every fascist threat.
She also referred to the heroic uprising of the Polytechnic as the beginning of the end of the dictatorship, with Cyprus suffering the heaviest blow with the treacherous coup and the Turkish invasion.
The occupation of the Metsovio Polytechnic in November 1973 triggered a mass uprising, leading to the restoration of popular sovereignty, as noted by the Speaker of Parliament.
