EOKA Foundation Denounces Distortion of Avxentiou's Sacrifice

The EOKA Liberation Struggle Foundation and the Council for Historical Remembrance of the Struggle have issued a statement denouncing the reproduction of colonial falsehoods regarding the sacrifice of Grigoris Avxentiou. According to the statement, claims of Avxentiou's suicide are a distortion of historical truth and serve to diminish the hero's sacrifice.
The EOKA Foundation refers to false testimonies and fabricated evidence used by the British during the period 1955-1959 to cover up their practices. It is noted that the youth of Cyprus reject such narratives, recognizing the value of the Struggle and the contribution of the heroes.
The statement emphasizes that historical memory and the sacrifice of the fighters cannot be treated lightly or distorted by 'newfound propagandists'. The Foundation expresses regret for the reproduction of these falsehoods, even by circles that identify themselves as 'liberal' and 'progressive', whom it describes as 'mouthpieces of colonial propaganda'.
