Artists Respond to Trump's Criticism of Museum Exhibits

Artists and academics in the US are strongly reacting to the White House's criticism of exhibits at the Smithsonian Institution. The Trump administration accuses museums of promoting a "woke" agenda through exhibitions on African American rights, the LGBTQI+ community, immigration history, and the pandemic.
The list of "problematic" exhibits includes a text from the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Afrofuturist works, Pride flags, and a portrait of Anthony Fauci. Rigoberto A. Gonzalez compared the move to the "degenerate art" exhibitions in Nazi Germany.
Amy Sherald withdrew her exhibition, denouncing censorship, emphasizing that "When governments police museums, they police imagination." The initiative is part of a White House effort to "align" museums with "American exceptionalism," an idea that often overlooks the dark pages of history.
Over 150 art organizations have pledged to resist any political pressure, highlighting the importance of freedom of artistic expression.
