The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Giannis Kefalogiannis, addressed the prevention and control measures for industrial installations, following the explosion at Violanta and the fire at Kazania in Perama.

Mr. Kefalogiannis stated that the Fire Investigation Department identified the causes of the Violanta explosion within 24 hours and is investigating the Perama incident in cooperation with the prosecutorial authorities. He also highlighted the immediate mobilization of the fire brigade in Perama, with 48 firefighters and 24 vehicles, and the issuance of the 112 message at the request of the mayor.

Regarding the prevention framework, the minister recalled the adoption of the European SEVESO III directive by Greece since 2016. For the Perama facility, he mentioned that it is a higher-level SEVESO site, with an approved study and active fire protection certificate valid until 2028.

Finally, he clarified that the potential relocation of the facility does not fall within his responsibilities, but concerns the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Region, and the Municipality.
