Cyprus: Key Factor for Returns to Syria, Says Chartsiotis

The Minister of Justice, Marios Chartsiotis, stated that Cyprus plays a pivotal role in the returns of individuals, particularly to Syria. The statement was made during the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council.

According to Mr. Chartsiotis, 90% of the returns from EU member states to Syria during the period 1/1/2025-1/9/2025 were carried out through Cyprus.

In the Schengen Area Barometer, Cyprus is recognized as a model country in utilizing the voluntary return mechanism. The European Commission supports Cyprus in its efforts for deeper integration into the Schengen system.

Mr. Chartsiotis emphasized the need for adequate funding for Eurojust to effectively combat cross-border crime. Ministers also discussed the protection of political figures and the impact of the situation in Gaza on the internal security of the EU.

Furthermore, an exchange of views took place regarding the strengthening of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, FRONTEX.
