Cyprus to Collaborate with US, EU to Upgrade Air and Naval Bases

The Cyprus Ministry of Defense is in talks with the United States and the European Union to upgrade the "Andreas Papandreou" Air Base in Paphos and the "Evangelos Florakis" Naval Base in Mari.
Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas stated that the upgrades will contribute to Cyprus' enhanced role in the region, given the crises in Gaza and Lebanon.
According to Mr. Palmas, American officials have visited the air base twice, while contacts have been made with Europeans regarding the naval base. The naval base upgrade is expected to be completed in 2-3 years, while the air base upgrade is estimated at 1.5 to 2 years.
The Minister assured that the bases remain Cypriot property and will continue to serve allies in training and citizen evacuation missions.
Cyprus' geographical location enhances its role as a "country representing the Mediterranean in Europe," making the modernization of the bases necessary.
