The EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, emphasized Cyprus' central role in promoting sustainable development and cooperation in the Mediterranean during the upcoming EU Presidency, speaking at the 2nd "Cyprus Forum Brussels".

The Cypriot Presidency of the EU in the first half of 2026 is a "unique opportunity" for Cyprus to contribute to shaping the future of Europe, Mr. Kadis stated.

Cyprus will focus on developing a sustainable blue economy, strengthening the competitiveness of fisheries and aquaculture, and improving international ocean governance.

The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the EU, Christina Rafti, outlined the priorities of the Presidency, with emphasis on competitiveness, defense, and migration.

Cyprus is taking over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in a period of geopolitical instability and major challenges, Ms. Rafti emphasized.
