Cyprus Talks: Uncertainty Over Five-Party Meeting Due to Turkey

The date for the informal five-party meeting on Cyprus in New York in July remains uncertain, as Turkey has not yet agreed to the proposed dates. According to government spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the United Nations had proposed July 24 and 25, but Ankara has not responded.
Both President Christodoulidis and the parties in Cyprus want substantive negotiations, in contrast to Turkey. The Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties called for the start of substantive negotiations, based on UN resolutions, international law, and the European acquis.
Next week, MarĂa Ăngela HolguĂn will visit London and Brussels to meet with those involved in the Cyprus issue, including Johannes Hahn. She is then expected to return to Cyprus for a new round of meetings.
The government spokesperson emphasized the crucial role of the EU and its active involvement in efforts to restart negotiations.
