Cyprus Issue: Backstage Negotiations and Guterres Formula
Share on:

Backstage negotiations on the Cyprus issue continue, focusing on the new Guterres formula. Nikos Christodoulides referred to the UN Secretary-General's “work” “away from publicity,” avoiding references to a specific framework or document.

The aim of the effort is to bring the two sides closer together, based on a satisfaction equation, in view of the resumption of negotiations. According to leaks, the formula aims to reaffirm the convergences reached up to Crans Montana, for a solution in accordance with the resolutions of the Security Council.

The United Nations statement after the leaders' meeting at the Ντιάν residence highlighted the “commitment and involvement of the Secretary-General of the UN” and the “readiness of the two leaders to support the efforts.” However, the process is moving slowly, with Τουφάν Έρχιουρμαν showing a slowdown.

Despite the progress noted in the discussion on Confidence Building Measures, the Greek Cypriot side remains cautiously optimistic. Nikos Christodoulides announced announcements after the next meeting of the leaders.
