Nicosia Disappointed with Guterres' Report to Security Council
Share on:

The Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed disappointment with the policy of equal distances maintained by the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, in his report to the Security Council regarding UNFICYP. Nicosia is calling for a clearer record of Turkey's responsibilities, especially on issues such as the living conditions of enclaved persons and missing persons.

In its statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that it looks forward to a new expanded meeting under the auspices of the Secretary-General, with the aim of resuming talks from where they left off in Crans Montana in 2017.

Special mention is made of the enclosed area of Varosha, where Nicosia calls for compliance with Security Council resolutions and emphasizes Turkey's sole responsibility. In addition, violations by the occupying army in the Deneia area are reported.

The Secretary-General's report on UNFICYP, covering the period from June 12 to December 15, 2025, records increased military activity along the ceasefire line, with 112 violations attributed to Turkish forces and 34 to the National Guard.

Nicosia reiterates that it respects the role of UNFICYP, but insists on a clearer record of Turkey's responsibilities, particularly with regard to enclaved and missing persons.
