Health Minister Michalis Damianos condemned the bombing of Athalassa Hospital as a violation of humanitarian law, speaking at a memorial service for the fallen.

He stated that July 20th marked a tragedy, with the bombing of the hospital 51 years ago costing the lives of 31 patients, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, a nurse, and a soldier.

Mr. Damianos emphasized that the Turkish invaders violated every rule of humanitarian law, with the asymmetric violence making no distinctions. He noted that the targeting of a psychiatric hospital during wartime highlights the harsh face of war.

Furthermore, he underscored the importance of defending the rights of the mentally ill and the Ministry of Health's effort to strengthen these rights, reduce stigma, and ensure access to quality care services.

He also mentioned the completion of Phase A of the project for the new Mental Health Center at Athalassa Hospital.
