Menelaou: UN SC Resolutions Only Viable Path for Cyprus

The negotiator for the Cyprus issue, Menelaos Menelaou, stated that the UN Security Council resolutions are the only viable path for Cyprus. The statement was made at the Cyprus Forum 2025 in Nicosia.
Mr. Menelaou referred to the initiatives undertaken after the appointment of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Maria Angela Holguin, and the meetings in Geneva and New York. He noted that confidence-building initiatives were decided to create a suitable climate for the start of negotiations.
He also referred to the meeting of the UN Secretary-General with the President of the Republic and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community in New York. Antonio Guterres is expected to send his Personal Envoy after October 19 for contacts in Cyprus and the involved countries.
Mr. Menelaou described the appointment of the Personal Envoy of the President of the European Commission, Johannes Hahn, as important. He stressed that the UN adheres to what is defined in the Security Council resolutions.
Former MEP, Niyazi Kizilyurek, proposed teaching Turkish and Greek in schools on both sides and organizing intercommunal cultural festivals.
Giulia Bertezzolo, from the European Commission, stated that there is an ongoing UN process and that the EU is discussing with both communities to find common ground.
Dr. Marvin Suesse referred to the case of the Irish issue, pointing out that lessons can be learned.
