N. Christodoulides: Reforms in Local Government are Necessary

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, described the reform implemented for Local Government as essential, speaking at the General Assembly of the Union of Municipalities.
Mr. Christodoulides emphasized that any corrective adjustments will be examined through dialogue with all stakeholders. He also referred to the importance of cooperation between the government and the Union of Municipalities in addressing challenges.
Furthermore, he expressed his gratitude to the Ministers of Finance and Interior for the arrangements regarding financial issues of the Municipalities, including additional grants and the salary expenditure limit.
Regarding the state grant to the Municipalities, he reminded that there is relevant legislation for 117 million euros, an amount agreed upon with the Union of Municipalities.
President Christodoulides noted that, despite the challenges, the new operating framework constitutes a healthier basis for local authorities. He also mentioned that the institution of the Deputy Mayor and the plans that did not yield the expected results will be re-examined.
