Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council: Priorities Outlined
The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, outlined the three main priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU during a meeting with a delegation from the European Committee of the Regions, led by its President, Kata Tüttö, at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.
The priorities are bringing European citizens closer to the EU, strengthening European autonomy (particularly in defense and competitiveness), and Cyprus's geographical proximity to the Middle East.
President Christodoulides emphasized that public support for the EU in Cyprus exceeds 70%. He also referred to housing as a key European challenge, welcoming EU-level initiatives.
The President of the European Committee of the Regions, Kata Tüttö, stressed the role of local and regional authorities in bringing Europe closer to citizens. The 238th meeting of the Bureau of the European Committee of the Regions will take place in Nicosia on February 9-10, 2026.
