UN Officials Support Resumption of Cyprus Talks

UN officials have expressed their support for the resumption of talks between the two sides in Cyprus, according to statements made at a press conference in Ledra Palace. Alim Siddique, spokesperson for the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), stressed the importance of bi-communal cooperation.

Sergiy Illarionov, Coordinator of the Office of the Mission of Good Services, noted that the UN looks forward to cooperation from both sides, following the election of Tufan Erhürman as leader of the Turkish Cypriot community.

Progress on the wastewater treatment plant in occupied Mia Milia, as well as the expansion of the Pedieos Linear Park in the Turkish Cypriot community, were also mentioned at the press conference.

Mr. Siddique stressed that the UN is working to maintain peace and build trust on the island, while Mr. Illarionov referred to the efforts of the Mission of Good Services to support the peace process.

Jakhongir Khaydarov, Head of the UNDP Office in Cyprus, referred to EU-funded projects related to Cultural Heritage and Local Infrastructure Facility.

Abimbola Aina, Head of the Political Affairs Section of UNFICYP, referred to the initiative of the UN Youth Champions for the Environment and Peace (YCEP).
