UNFICYP mandate renewal in Cyprus expected to proceed smoothly

The Permanent Representative of Somalia to the United Nations, and President of the Security Council for January 2026, expressed his belief that the process of renewing the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) will proceed smoothly.
He also stated that the Security Council supports the Good Offices of the Secretary-General and remains committed to an approach based on dialogue and de-escalation.
The President of the Security Council referred to the importance of maintaining stability on the ground and stressed the need to respect the existing regime in the buffer zone, highlighting UNFICYP's stabilizing role.
Furthermore, he mentioned the need to promote de-escalation initiatives, such as Confidence Building Measures.
