Multiple Pensions for Officials: Obstacles to Abolition, says Accountant General

The abolition of multiple pensions for public officials is in doubt, despite the approval of the relevant legislative framework by the Plenary of Parliament and its signing by the President of the Republic last August. The reason is three unconstitutional provisions concerning the suspension of pension payments to public and state officials who assume new positions.
The Accountant General of the Republic, Andreas Antoniades, stated on the show Alpha Enimerosi, that he requested an opinion from the Legal Service, which advised him not to implement the specific provisions. The Legal Service has requested the Ministry of Finance to submit a new amendment to the legislation.
Mr. Antoniades estimated that the new amendment should "reflect the core of the pension" with a specific amount of money. He pointed out that the existing provisions are likely to be challenged in court in the coming years.
He also mentioned that someone who leaves the position of MP in 2026 and becomes a pensioner, no one can touch his pension, and that the suspension of the pension in case of appointment to the position of Minister after May 2026 is unconstitutional.
