Multiple Pensions and Communication Games in Cyprus

The discussion on multiple pensions and the parallel payment of salary and pension in Cyprus remains open, focusing on future officials. Parliament is called upon to make decisions after the referral of laws by President Nikos Christodoulides, who made recommendations for constitutional changes.
The proposed changes are considered substantial and difficult to implement immediately, as they require modifications that took two years to agree on initially. Parliament will convene to decide whether to accept the referrals with changes or reject them, with the possible involvement of the Supreme Court.
There is concern that even if Parliament makes changes, the legislation may be deemed unconstitutional in the future, as happened during the Christofias administration. The law on voluntary waiver of pension, passed by Parliament and signed by the President, is considered mainly for communication purposes, as it does not oblige current officials to waive their pensions.
The parties wanted to pressure officials to waive their pensions, but the legislation does not cover them. The situation remains complex, and time will tell if there will be a substantial change.
