Savvides: 38 Bills for Attorney General Reform

Attorney General Giorgos Savvides submitted 38 bills to the Minister of Justice regarding the reform of the Attorney General's office. The bills, processed by the Legal Service, were initially submitted by the executive branch in October 2024.
In a round table discussion at the University of Cyprus, Mr. Savvides stated that the Legal Service has done a tremendous job in evaluating the bills. He also expressed concern that he was not consulted before the political decision for the reform was taken by the Christodoulides Government.
Mr. Savvides stressed the need for serious consideration regarding the absence of preventive control by the Supreme Constitutional Court, warning of potential constitutional issues. He also expressed disagreement with the Attorney General's term coinciding with that of the President of the Republic, as this would undermine his independence.
Evangelos Venizelos, former Deputy Prime Minister of the Greek Government, supported the separation of the Attorney General's roles to avoid international judicial review. Polys Polyviou appeared cautious, while Achilles Emilianides stressed the need for the autonomy of public prosecutors. Kostas Paraskevas supported the separation of roles, emphasizing the need for institutional counterweights in the appointment of officials.
