The outgoing Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus, Colin Stewart, stated that the fundamental obstacle to resolving the Cyprus issue is the fact that both communities remain trapped in their own narratives.

In an interview, Mr. Stewart mentioned that the stalemate is due to a deeply rooted rigidity, as each side interprets events through the prism of its own historical victimization. He argued that only if mutual pain is accepted will the leaderships be able to show the necessary flexibility.

Regarding the role of the guarantor powers, Mr. Stewart expressed a positive view, noting that the improved climate in Greek-Turkish relations and the constructive stance of the United Kingdom have contributed positively. He reiterated that the UN framework remains the Bi-zonal Bi-communal Federation (BBF) with political equality.

He also expressed concern about the escalation of tension caused by recent developments in property issues and the arrests of Greek Cypriots in the occupied territories.

In closing, he referred to the role of UNFICYP, stressing that if the UN withdraws from the dead zone, conflict will erupt.
