Attorney General Giorgos Savvides and Assistant Attorney General Savvas Angelides met with Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, Michael McGrath, in Brussels to discuss rule of law issues, particularly in relation to the European Commission's Rule of Law Report for Cyprus in 2025.

During the meeting, the Republic of Cyprus provided updates on actions taken to implement the report's recommendations and developments in bills for the reform of the Legal Service. Mr. McGrath was also informed about measures taken regarding the Cyprus Investment Program and its termination.

Furthermore, there was an exchange of views on the next steps following the Court's decision against Malta, with the aim of archiving the pending infringement against the Republic of Cyprus. Further consultation was agreed between the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Cyprus to the EU (MAEE) and the Commissioner's office.

Ahead of Cyprus's assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the EU in January 2026, Mr. Savvides briefed on priorities in the field of criminal law and invited the Commissioner to visit Cyprus.
