Tatar Calls for Two-State Solution in Peace Day Message

In his message for the International Day of Peace on September 1st, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar argued that peace is linked to the acceptance of a "two-state solution based on sovereign equality." He also referred to the role of Turkish guarantees for the safety of Turkish Cypriots.
Mr. Tatar stated that Turkish Cypriots, having experienced war, know the value of peace and seek a solution through dialogue. He referred to the 1974 Turkish invasion as a "Cyprus peace operation," which, he claimed, brought peace to the island.
He reiterated his position that a solution based on the existence of two states and the sovereign equality of Turkish Cypriots is needed, linking the security of the Turkish Cypriot community to the presence of Turkey and the deterrent presence of the Turkish Armed Forces.
