Tatar: Pre-election Sacrifices on the Cyprus Issue

Prospects for a resolution on the Cyprus issue are being sacrificed on the altar of the pre-election campaign in the occupied territories, as Ersin Tatar focuses on increasing his approval ratings. His actions are reminiscent of Rauf Denktash, such as the arrest of Greek Cypriots, which he defends despite reports of instructions from Ankara.
The spokesperson for the President of the European Parliament, Youry Laas, condemned the arrest, without mentioning the occupying authorities or Turkey. "Parliament remains vigilant and will raise its voice whenever human rights are threatened. There can be no tolerance for arbitrary detentions or human rights violations."
During his farewell meeting with Colin Stewart, Tatar expressed dissatisfaction with the Australian's remarks about the non-existence of a two-state solution. "I told him that his mandate does not allow him to make comments that prejudge the outcome of developments. There are two equal sides in Cyprus," Tatar stated.
Stewart reiterated that the two states are not on the United Nations' agenda. "I want to be clear. The United Nations, of course, is guided by the resolutions of the Security Council."
Tatar referred to a statement by Maria Holguin about the lack of common ground, arguing that the federation model has been exhausted. He also blamed the Greek Cypriot side for the non-functioning of the Technical Committees.
