Defense Minister Vassilis Palmas stated that the Government aims to utilize the European financial instrument SAFE to upgrade the National Guard by 2030. The goal is to fully exploit the available funding to meet the needs of the National Guard General Staff.

During a discussion in Nicosia, Mr. Palmas emphasized that the Ministry of Defense has drawn up a multi-year equipment plan, flexible for the integration of new technologies. "The situation in Cyprus with the occupying forces leaves no room for complacency," he said, adding that Turkey cannot join the SAFE program due to its expansionist policy.

The Defense Minister highlighted Cyprus' right to upgrade its defense capabilities and its geostrategic role. He also mentioned the increase in defense spending in the EU, from 189 billion euros in 2014 to 343 billion euros in 2024.

MEP Kostas Mavridis stressed the importance of utilizing the opportunities provided by participation in armament programs, adding that Cyprus faces a continuing threat of occupation.

A discussion followed with representatives of the domestic defense industry and experts.
