The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, had a phone call with the new Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, immediately after the announcement of the election results in the occupied territories.

According to government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the initiative for the call came from President Christodoulides, aiming to restore communication channels.

Mr. Christodoulides congratulated Mr. Erhurman on his election and expressed his readiness for a joint meeting as soon as possible. Mr. Erhurman pledged to contact him soon to determine the place and time of the meeting.

President Christodoulides reiterated his willingness to contribute constructively to the efforts of the UN Secretary-General to restart negotiations, based on the Security Council resolutions and the principles of the EU.

The upcoming meeting is the first test of intentions after the change of leadership in the occupied territories, with Nicosia expressing readiness for political dialogue under the auspices of the UN.
