Christodoulides: Cyprus as a safe harbor in a turbulent region

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, presented Cyprus as a "safe harbor" in a turbulent region, during the 21st Economist Cyprus Summit in Nicosia.
Mr. Christodoulides emphasized Cyprus' role as a connectivity hub between three continents and the country's Western orientation. He referred to trilateral and multilateral partnerships with Greece, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and the UAE, as well as the goal of a regional security organization in the Middle East.
Special mention was made of the "Amalthea" sea corridor for sending humanitarian aid to Gaza, with over 25,000 tons of aid having been transported so far.
The President also referred to the upgrading of Cyprus-US relations, with emphasis on the "Andreas Papandreou" air base in Paphos.
Ahead of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2026, Nikos Christodoulides stressed the need to strengthen the EU's strategic autonomy and engage with issues in the South.
Regarding the Cyprus issue, Nikos Christodoulides stressed that its resolution is a matter of security for the region and Europe, while the election of Tufan Erhürman in the occupied territories creates a new political environment.
N. Christodoulides expressed hope that there will be movement on the Cyprus issue, with the help of the United Nations and the EU.
