Christodoulides and NATO Secretary General Discussed SAFE Program and Cyprus Issue

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, met with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, in Copenhagen, where they discussed the Cyprus issue and strengthening EU-NATO cooperation.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the European Political Community dinner, ahead of Cyprus's assumption of the EU Council Presidency in January 2026. President Christodoulides briefed the NATO Secretary General on developments in the Cyprus issue, linking progress in EU-Turkey relations to resolving the problem based on UN resolutions.
The importance of strengthening EU-NATO cooperation was emphasized, with a focus on the Readiness 2030 initiative. Mr. Christodoulides stressed that Defense and Security will be priorities of the Cypriot Presidency, with emphasis on the EU's strategic autonomy. He also referred to Russian challenges and support for Ukraine.
Regarding the SAFE program, the President stressed that respect for international law and territorial integrity is a prerequisite.
