Cyprus to Boost Defense Amid Cyprus Issue Stalemate

Defense Minister Vassilis Palmas emphasized the need to strengthen Cyprus' defense capabilities due to the ongoing stalemate in the Cyprus issue and the presence of occupying forces. The statements were made on the sidelines of a visit to the Nicosia-Kyrenia-Morphou Recruitment Office.
Mr. Palmas expressed satisfaction with the equipment funds in the 2026 state budget. He mentioned that Cyprus participates in the EU's SAFE regulation, with an available amount of €1.2 billion to strengthen the National Guard.
Furthermore, he highlighted the increase in funds due to international developments, allowing adaptation to modern equipment programs. He stressed that strengthening defense is a duty to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as to ensure peace.
He also referred to the significant visit of President Nikos Christodoulides to France and the President of the UAE to Cyprus, emphasizing cooperation in the field of defense. In particular, he noted the excellent long-standing cooperation with France on equipment issues and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation following the President's meeting with Emmanuel Macron.
Finally, he described the visit of the President of the UAE as positive, expecting benefits in defense, energy and other areas.
