Cyprus MFA Disappointed with UN SG Reports on Cyprus

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its disappointment with the United Nations' “long-standing tendency” to maintain equal distances in the UN Secretary-General's reports on Cyprus. In a statement, the MFA said that this results in a “fragmented and inaccurate picture” of the realities on the island.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the reaffirmation of the Secretary-General's commitment to continue efforts to resume negotiations, with the aim of achieving a sustainable and comprehensive solution based on the agreed framework and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. It also expressed satisfaction with the substantive discussions held on fundamental aspects of the Cyprus issue, for the first time in five years.

The government shares concerns about the situation in the enclosed area of Varosha, for which Turkey bears sole responsibility. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also noted its concern about violations by the occupying army in the dead zone, especially in the Deryneia area.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to continued cooperation with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for the effective implementation of its mandate.
