Amsterdam: Pride Week Kicks Off with Major Demonstration

Thousands gathered in Amsterdam for the Pride Walk, marking the start of Pride week events in the Netherlands. Demonstrators emphasized the need to protect LGBTQI+ rights worldwide.

The walk, culminating in a parade on the Amsterdam canals next weekend, had both a celebratory and political character. Ben Thomas, winner of the 'Mister Bear 2024' competition, stated that the walk is important for defending the rights of the community.

Protesters held rainbow flags and placards, expressing solidarity with transgender people and satirizing political slogans. Dani van Duijn, an IT specialist, expressed concerns about the situation in the US and the rise of hate speech. Lina van Dinter, a student, stressed the need to improve the situation for transgender people in the Netherlands, referring to long waiting times for gender-affirming care.
