Alarming Increase in Cesarean Sections and Prematurity in Cyprus

The rates of cesarean sections in Cyprus have shown a worrying increase, reaching 60.7% in 2023, according to data from the Health Monitoring Unit (ΜΠΥ).
Cyprus records one of the highest rates in Europe, according to Euro-Peristat data for 2019.
At the same time, prematurity rates remain high, at 12.9% in 2023.
The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Press and Information Office (ΓΤΠ), is launching an annual campaign to promote natural childbirth and prevent prematurity.
The campaign aims to inform the general public and health professionals about the value of natural childbirth and the prevention of premature births.
Natural childbirth offers significant benefits, while cesarean section is recommended only when medically necessary.
