There has been a significant increase in the rates of cesarean sections in Cyprus, reaching 60.7% in 2023, according to data from the Health Monitoring Unit (ΜΠΥ). Simultaneously, prematurity rates remain high, at 12.9% in 2023.

The Press and Information Office (ΓΤΠ) has announced the launch of an annual campaign to promote natural childbirth and prevent prematurity, with the slogan "Natural childbirth: The miracle of life... naturally!". The aim is to inform the public and health professionals about the benefits of natural childbirth and the risks of prematurity.

Data shows that in 2022, planned cesarean sections amounted to 41% and emergency ones to 19%, while in 2023 the rates remained at the same levels. Prematurity is a significant public health challenge, with more than 15 million babies born prematurely each year worldwide, according to the WHO.

The campaign is organized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the ΓΤΠ, aiming to highlight the importance of natural childbirth and provide women with accurate information about their choices.

The Ministry of Health emphasizes that natural childbirth offers significant benefits, while cesarean section should only be performed when medically necessary.
