Increased School Assistants in Cyprus: Doubled Since 2016

The number of school assistants in Cyprus has doubled since 2016, according to data presented to the Parliament. The Ministry of Education emphasizes that the needs of students with disabilities are being adequately met.
The Minister of Education, Athena Michaelidou, stated that for the 2025-2026 school year, 1342 school assistants are employed in public kindergartens, primary and special schools, serving the needs of 2719 students. In addition, 412 school assistants are employed in secondary schools, serving the needs of 770 students.
Cabinet Decisions: 242 new positions for school assistants were approved for primary education and 37 for secondary education (July 8, 2024). Also, 232 new positions were approved for primary education and 68 for secondary education (July 30, 2025).
Ms. Michaelidou emphasized that it has been possible to adequately meet the existing needs for school assistants and to staff the schools in a timely manner.
